Amye’s Journey to Becoming Financially Independant

Amye became a Client Services Administrator at Fell Financial Planning in July 2022. Although it was a huge change for her she quickly became an important part of our team. Growing and showing incredible maturity in a very short space of time. We’re very sad to see her leave but excited for her on the next stage of her journey as she heads to university to study ecology and we wish her all the very best for her future.

When I first started working at Fell Financial Planning, I had just left High School and I was starting to realise how little my education had taught me about money and finances.

For the last 13 months, I have been journeying through the world of financial planning and I have only just begun to scratch the surface of understanding. What is a pension? How is tax calculated? How does investing work?

I have learned so much in my time here and I would like to share with you my 5 key takeaways:

1. The Importance of Income Protection.

You don’t have to have a lot of money to get insurance. If you think you can’t afford to insure it, all the more reason you should.

2. Everyone is at a different stage of their financial journey.

Working at Fell, I have had the opportunity to meet all kinds of individuals. People who are looking at the best way to leave a legacy, looking to start a family of their own or even just getting ready to move out and navigate the world, like me.

Some people are in the accumulation phase and some people are in the decumulation phase. Depending on which phase you are in, different strategies are going to be most valuable to you.

It is important to remember that everyone has different ideas about what success means to them personally and everyone makes progress at their own pace.

3. Teamwork.

From working in a small team of 4 people, I have learned how to best utilise a team member’s strengths. Everyone in the team has their own unique set of experiences that you can utilise to help you accomplish a task together.

From observing and interacting with the large teams that work within financial providers, I have learned the importance of good communication within your team and between different teams inside the wider organisation. If this communication falls through at any point, the consequences can be huge. This leads me to my next point…

4. Write. Everything. Down.

If it’s not written down it didn’t happen.

5. The way we work is constantly evolving. Change is the only constant.

Looking through old reports and files has shown me that there is always a better way to show something. Every time we do something it gets better. Trying new ways of doing things is how we grow.

I wish I could quantify how much my time at Fell has helped me grow as a person. I have learned to respect myself, respect my time, and choose what I let affect me. I know how important it is to question everything and to expect nothing. I have developed skills that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I am so grateful to Scott, Amy, and Lauren for teaching me all of this. They constantly pushed me to do bigger and better things and they believed in me beyond what I could see for myself. They are the best friends and mentors that anyone could ask for.
